Ecstasy, by Mike Leigh

Produced as the inaugural production for AEA Theater Company “Cole Theatre” In Chicago

Ecstasy, written by Mike Leigh in 1979, is set in a dilapidated London flat, depicting the bleak lives of working-class characters in post-industrial Britain. The play centers on Jean, a lonely, alcohol-dependent woman grappling with disillusionment. Known for its raw naturalism and improvisational roots, Ecstasy offers a powerful social commentary on the emotional toll of economic hardship. Mike Leigh, celebrated for his character-driven storytelling, delivers a piercing look at loneliness and despair in this deeply human portrayal.
